Iguazu is one of Argentina’s most memorable highlights.  Located in the far northeast of the country, in the province of Misiones, the area is famous for the powerful waterfalls which stretch over 2,700 metres and line the triangle which forms the border of Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay. Surrounded by miles of luscious green sub-tropical rainforest, the climate is generally warm and humid, with temperatures soaring in the summer months (November – March) and high precipitation all year round.

It is very easy to make a side trip to Iguazu from Buenos Aires.  Less than a 2 hour flight from the capital it is possible to head up there for a couple of nights and visit both the Argentine and Brazilian National Parks for very different perspectives of this natural wonder. With our driver Juan on hand to take you around, ensuring priority entrance into the park and across the border to Brazil, you can take it all in your stride and enjoy spending the days wandering leisurely around the parks.

Iguazu National Park, Argentina

Visiting the Argentine National Park is a great way to get up close to the waterfalls.  With the numerous platforms crossing the river and streams and taking you literally on top of the falls, you can really get a feel of how powerful these raging waters are as they crash down into a cloud of mist below.

To begin the day we can arrange for you to make a short safari by truck into the rainforest.   Your English-speaking guide will teach you about the flora and fauna that inhabit the area.   You may also be lucky enough to spot some of the many animals, birds and insects along the way, including capuchin monkeys, toucans, coatis and brightly coloured butterflies and moths that live in abundance in the forest.  At the end of the trip you will jump aboard a boat and head up stream towards the waterfalls themselves.  This is great fun!  Your boat speeds into the spray of the falls, soaking you right through.   But this is often a welcome refreshment in the heat of the summer, and don’t worry, your belongings will be stored away and kept dry!

The remainder of your day can be spent following the many walkways and footpaths that take you through the park, enjoying the views of the waterfalls from all angles. And don’t forget to keep an eye out for caiman (a type of crocodile) that live in the surrounding waters.  A really enjoyable day out!

Iguazu National Park, Brazil

From the Brazilian side you can see the waterfalls from a panoramic viewpoint. This is a fantastic way to see their enormity and formation, and if you’re a keen photographer you will be sure to get some great shots.  We advise spending half a day on the Brazilian side as the park is not as big as in Argentina, but nevertheless it is without doubt worth a visit.

Who should go?

A visit to Iguazu can be enjoyed by everyone; adults and children, so it is also the perfect destination for a family.  Other than visiting the waterfalls, it is possible to make walks into the jungle, visit a local bird rehabilitation centre and a gorgeous hummingbird garden where you can see these exquisite birds feeding from the sweetened water.  Or you can just spend your time cooling off in the pool!

The forests around Iguazu are home to thousands of bird species and are therefore ideal for bird watchers.  We can arrange for a local expert guide to take you into the depth of the jungle in hope of sighting some of these beautiful species endemic to the area.

Whatever you decide we will give you tips on places to go and what to do in order to get the most out of your stay.

"The whole trip was great and the few days at Iguazu were fantastic!  We really enjoyed staying at the Secret Garden and John was a mine of information and made great cocktails" (Liz, Judith & Kathleen, Derbyshire)

Accommodation

The frontier town of Puerto Iguazu is the main base for visiting the waterfalls.  It is small and unspoilt, despite the number of tourists that visit throughout the year.  Accommodation is varied and we can book luxury hotels, self-catering cabanas for the whole family, romantic boutique lodges in the jungle and intimate guesthouses.  One of our favourites is a wonderful B&B with a fantastic owner who has cultivated his own little jungle in the courtyard of his garden.  Just tell us your preference and we will make sure you have a comfortable place to relax at the end of each day.
